On May 7th, 2010, Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) students will host the fourth annual Dance for a Dream event, an evening dance benefit in support of a chosen charity. This is a non-profit event run entirely by Dartmouth student volunteers. For the past 4 years, Dance for a Dream has been organized by DMS and Dartmouth College. This year, the efforts have expanded campus-wide and the Dartmouth Institute, the Graduate School, Tuck and Thayer, have also joined the cause. Each year, the proceeds of Dance for a Dream go to an organization with a vision for improving the healthcare of an under-served community. This year we hope to make a large impact on the rebuilding efforts in Haiti by supporting GHESKIO, an international organization based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, that has ties to the local community.
GHESKIO was the first institution in the world dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS. GHESKIO has provided continuous medical care in Haiti since 1982 - never once shutting its doors or charging fees. Since the January 12th, 2010 earthquake, GHESKIO has offered humanitarian assistance and emergency care to those affected by the disaster and has continued to provide life-saving medications to people with HIV/AIDS.
